- (1958- )Irish poet, born in Cork, he attended University College in Cork, where he was the contemporary of, among others, Maurice Riordan, Theo Dorgan, Sean Dunne (see entries) and other poets. He now lives for most of the year in America, where he teaches at St. Michael's College, Vermont. He became an American citizen in 1994. His poems have appeared in American, Irish, English, Australian, Japanese and Argentinean anthologies, including the Norton Introduction to Poetry (1981) and Contemporary Poets of New England, Middlebury College Press (2002). With Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill (see entry), he edited Jumping Off Shadows: Selected Contemporary Irish Poetry (1995). He has won many awards, including the Patrick Kavanagh Award (1983); the Alan Dowling Poetry Fellowship (1986); the Austin Clarke Centenary Poetry Award (1996); and the National Poetry Competition (Poetry Society of England) (1999).
